Teen Safety
Kai is available to people age 13 and older. This page explains the protections Kai currently applies to accounts identified as belonging to people ages 13 through 17. It supplements our Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Community Rules.
1. How age eligibility works
On the web, Kai asks for a birthday before provider sign-in and blocks an under-13 result before creating a Kai account or session.
On supported Apple devices, Kai may request Apple's Declared Age Range when the operating system says it is required. A usable under-13 range stops sign-in before a Kai account or session is created. If Apple does not require the request, the request is unavailable, sharing is declined, or the result cannot establish eligibility, provider sign-in continues and Kai asks for a birthday during required setup. Android also collects birthday during required setup after provider sign-in. These native fallback paths can create a provider-backed Kai account and session before Kai receives age information, but an under-13 birthday cannot complete setup.
Kai uses a birthday or a usable platform age range to determine eligibility and an age group. Kai does not display a birthday on a public profile. Kai does not currently provide a parental-consent or guardian-authorization flow. If the law where you live requires that authorization for you to use Kai, you may not use Kai until Kai offers an appropriate process.
2. Protections for teen accounts
Kai currently applies these protections to accounts identified as belonging to people ages 13 through 17:
- the profile is private, and Kai rejects attempts to make it public;
- a Post submitted as public is limited to followers, and an everyone reply setting is limited to followers;
- the profile is excluded from public profile suggestions;
- public leaderboard participation is limited to followers;
- starting a direct conversation, inviting someone into Group messaging, or using a Post profile tag, mention, or collaboration when either person is a teen requires those two people to follow each other;
- Post like counts are hidden from a teen viewer; and
- access to Kai's Post surfaces is unavailable from local midnight through 6:00 a.m. and after two hours of recorded social use in a local calendar day.
Blocks apply in both directions. A blocked person cannot start or continue direct messaging with the person who blocked them, and blocked relationships are removed from relevant social discovery and interaction paths.
These protections depend on accurate age information. They do not make every interaction safe, and Kai does not review every message or upload before it is delivered.
3. What Kai does not currently provide
Kai does not currently provide guardian-linked accounts, a parental activity dashboard, guardian approval of contacts or content, or parental time-limit controls. The account holder's device and platform controls remain separate from Kai.
4. Staying safe
- Keep your home address, school, live location, passwords, financial information, and private health information private.
- Be cautious if someone asks to move a conversation off Kai, keep a relationship secret, send money, or share sexual or intimate images.
- Never meet someone from an online interaction without involving a trusted adult and following appropriate safety precautions.
- Block and report accounts that pressure, threaten, groom, harass, exploit, or impersonate you.
- If someone threatens to share an intimate image, do not pay or send more images. Save the account name, message, and content location if it is safe to do so, tell a trusted adult, and use our Intimate Image Removal process.
If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. Kai is not an emergency service.
5. Reporting and help
Use available reporting and blocking controls or email [email protected]. Include enough information for us to locate the account, Post, reply, message, image, or video. Do not forward an intimate image when a link or location is enough for us to find it.
Anyone can use our Intimate Image Removal process without a Kai account. A parent or legal guardian who believes a child under 13 provided personal information to Kai can email [email protected] to request review and deletion.
